Plumbing work in progress in the DMV

What is the normal price to replace a water heater?

No single figure holds from one house to the next. Water heater replacement cost comes from what the heater connects to and where it sits, far more than from the tank on the truck.

The big factors are the fuel, the capacity, how it vents and the code work a new install has to meet, such as an expansion tank where the system calls for one, a pan under a heater above finished rooms, and a fresh relief valve with its discharge pipe.

Swapping like for like, same size and fuel in the same spot, is always the cheapest version. Every change from that adds to it. A fuel change brings piping and venting. Going tankless changes the vent, the gas sizing and usually the wiring.

Our written estimate costs nothing. It names the exact heater, each code item, the permit, removal of the old tank and our warranty term, so it can be laid next to any other quote.

Timing changes the experience more than the number. A replacement booked while the old tank still works is planned around your week. The same job after the tank has split comes with a wet floor, a cold house and less room to compare quotes.
