Garbage disposal repair in MD, DC and Northern VA
A disposal that hums is usually jammed, not dead. We free jams, fix leaks, and when a unit really has failed we fit a new one and connect it to the dishwasher properly.
Disposal problems we fix
What it sounds like when you flip the switch tells us a lot.
- A hum with no spin, which usually means a jam
- No sound at all when you switch it on
- Water dripping from the unit itself
- A grinding noise you haven't heard before
What changes the price
- Repair or replacement, which comes down to where it's leaking
- The size and grade of the new unit, if it needs one
- What shape the drain connection under the sink is in
A humming disposal is usually still alive
When a disposal stops, it’s rarely as dead as it sounds. A few quick checks tell us whether you need a repair or a new unit.
- Reset and jam first
- We check the power, press the reset button and free the flywheel before a new unit comes up. A hum with no spin is usually a jam.
- Leaks traced to the source
- Water under the sink can be the sink flange, the dishwasher hose, the trap connection or the housing itself. Only the housing means a new unit.
- Fitted to your sink drain
- A new unit gets hooked to the trap and the dishwasher inlet properly, so it doesn’t inherit the old drain problem.
Before you book disposal repair
A hum means paying for a new unit.
Usually it’s jammed. We check the power, press the reset and free the jam first. If it still hums after that, the motor is gone and we tell you so.
The leak is worse than it looks.
A leak can come from the sink seal, the trap connection or the housing itself. Only a leaking housing means buying a new unit.
A new disposal will not work with the dishwasher.
A replacement includes the sink drain and the dishwasher inlet, so the new unit is not fitted onto an old problem.
You lose the whole day waiting.
The arrival window comes by text, and we call if it moves.
When disposals fail around DC
Thanksgiving to New Year is hard on a kitchen sink, and January is a peak month for drain cleaning. Scrape plates into the trash before they go in the sink. If the sink stays slow with the disposal running, see drain cleaning.
