Plumbing work in progress in the DMV

What is the most common plumbing problem?

Clogged drains. Kitchen sinks, bathroom basins, tubs and toilets that drain slowly or stop altogether are the call we get most, with dripping faucets and running toilets close behind.

Most clogs live in one fixture’s own drain. Hair and soap in a tub, cooking grease in a kitchen line, too much paper in a toilet. Those are short jobs.

When two or more drains slow down together, or a toilet gurgles while the washer empties, the blockage is further down in the main line. That is a bigger and different job, and it is worth knowing which you have before anyone starts.

A running toilet is the quiet one. It can waste water all day without a sound you notice, and a jump in the water bill is often the first clue.

Leaks under sinks and at old shutoff valves round out the list. A valve nobody has turned in years often will not close when you finally need it.
