Does EmPOWER Maryland pay for a heat pump water heater?
By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC
If you're in Maryland and your water heater is due, your electric company may pay part of a new one, as long as it's an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater. That's EmPOWER Maryland. The catch is how the rebate travels, so read the part about contractors before you book anyone, us included.
What the rebate pays for
EmPOWER Maryland rebates cover ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heaters. According to the program, the rebate comes through participating contractors, retailers or distributors, or through a direct rebate application. If you are switching from a fossil fuel water heater, the program says you may also qualify for additional electric make ready assistance, which helps with the electrical side of the change.
The program information we have does not list a dollar amount, so ask your utility what the rebate is for your heater before you count on it.
Who runs it
Your electric utility runs it under EmPOWER Maryland. That means BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Potomac Edison or SMECO, depending on who sends your electric bill. Each one handles its own rebates.
How the money moves
Most of these rebates move through the contractors and distributors on the program's list, so the contractor who is on that list usually ends up doing the job. The other route the program names is a direct rebate application from you.
Where we fit
We are not a participating EmPOWER Maryland contractor, so we can't put the rebate on your bill. If the rebate is the deciding factor, a contractor on your utility's list is the straightforward way to get it.
Whether a heater we install can still go through a direct rebate application is your utility's decision, so ask them before you buy. What we can do is come out, look at the space, the venting and the electrical, and give you a written, itemized price for a heat pump water heater or a standard tank, side by side. We don't quote water heaters over the phone.
Before you apply
This is what the program information said in October 2026. EmPOWER Maryland and your utility decide who qualifies and how much they pay, and we can't promise either.
Where this comes from
We built this page from our October 2026 research on EmPOWER Maryland heat pump water heater rebates, run by the Maryland utilities under EmPOWER Maryland (BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Potomac Edison and SMECO).
