How much does a 40 gallon hot water heater cost?
Less than people expect for the tank, and more than they expect for everything around it. The installed price of a 40 gallon heater is set by the fuel, the venting, the location and the code items.
Before you price a 40 gallon tank, make sure 40 is the right size. If hot water has been running short, buying the same capacity again buys the same problem. Stepping up one size changes the tank price slightly and leaves the labor where it was.
Gas or electric matters, as does the venting on a gas unit, whether the space can take a modern tank, which is often wider than the one it replaces, and the code items your house needs.
Our estimate names the heater by make, model and size and lists every code item, the permit and disposal of the old tank. It costs nothing to get.
Here is a sizing check you can do yourself. Count the showers taken back to back on a busy morning. A couple or a small family usually manages on 40 gallons. A household of four or more running showers, a dishwasher and laundry in the same hour tends to need more.
