Plumbing work in progress in the DMV

What is a reasonable call out fee?

Ours is zero. Coming to the house, finding the fault and putting the price in writing costs you nothing.

Plenty of companies do charge a call out fee or trip charge, and that can be fair if it buys you something. The question is what you get for it.

Before you book any plumber, ask three things. Is there a fee just to turn up? If you go ahead with the work, is it taken off the bill? And does it include a diagnosis and a written price, or only the visit?

A fee that covers a real diagnosis and comes off the job is reasonable. A fee for showing up, with the diagnosis billed on top by the hour, is the one to watch for.

The exception on our side is hidden leak detection. Tracing water inside a wall or a slab is its own job, and its price comes in writing before the search starts.

Want it looked at?

Book a visit with no call out fee and tell us what the fixture or pipe is doing.
