Plumbing Tips

Kitchen sink won't drain in Bethesda? 6 things to try before you call

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

Standing water in the sink and dinner guests in an hour. Try these six before you call. Between them they clear most kitchen clogs.

1. Check the disposal first

Hit the reset button on the bottom of the unit.

2. Run hot water, but stop short of boiling

Hot water loosens grease. Boiling can damage some pipes.

3. Use a plunger, with the other side sealed

Double sinks need both sides blocked to build pressure.

4. Clean the trap

The curved pipe under the sink catches most clogs. Put a bucket under it first.

5. Check the dishwasher drain line

A kinked hose can back up the sink.

6. Listen for gurgling elsewhere

If other drains gurgle too, it's likely the main line, and that's a call.

Hiring in Bethesda

There's no city of Bethesda. It's Montgomery County, and most plumbing there has to be done by a WSSC Water licensee. Ask for the number.
