What moves the price of a sewer line repair

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

On a sewer line repair, the price depends on things nobody can see from the surface, like how deep the pipe is, what it is made of and how much of it has failed. That is why nobody should give you a number before a camera has been down the line. Here is what the camera is looking for and what each finding does to the price.

1. Where the defect is and how deep

The camera locates the problem, and a locator on the surface marks the spot and reads the depth. A break three feet down in the front lawn is a different afternoon from one eight feet down under the driveway. Deeper trenches need shoring, more spoil and more time, and the price climbs with every foot.

2. What is on top of it

Grass is cheap to open and cheap to put back. A concrete driveway, a paved walkway, a porch, a retaining wall or a mature tree each have to be cut, removed and reinstated, and the reinstatement is often the larger cost. Inside the house, a line under a finished basement slab means breaking and re-pouring concrete and dealing with whatever flooring is on top.

In the rowhouse neighborhoods of DC and the older parts of Alexandria, the lateral may run under the neighbor's property or a shared alley, which brings access agreements into it before anything is dug.

3. Spot repair or full replacement

One cracked joint or one root intrusion on an otherwise sound pipe is a spot repair, meaning one excavation and one section replaced. A clay or cast iron line that is cracked at several joints, bellied in the middle and scaled throughout is a replacement, because a spot repair on a line like that buys you a year before the next one.

Both get priced in writing when both are honest options, side by side, so you can see what the difference actually buys.

4. Dig or line it

Where the pipe is structurally sound but leaking at the joints or letting roots in, a liner or pipe bursting can replace it from the inside with one or two access pits instead of a trench along its whole length. Where the pipe has collapsed, bellied or lost its shape, trenchless does not work and the line has to be dug. The camera tells us which, and we tell you.

5. Where your pipe ends and the public one begins

The homeowner usually owns the lateral from the house to the connection at the main in the street. Exactly where responsibility changes hands depends on the jurisdiction. WSSC Water in Montgomery and Prince George's, DC Water in the District, the Charles County Department of Public Works, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria each draw the line differently, and some will repair a defect in the public right of way at no cost to you. We check that before quoting, because a repair in the street that is not yours to pay for should not be on your estimate.

6. Permits, traffic and inspection

Sewer work is permitted and inspected everywhere we work. A dig in a public sidewalk or street adds a right-of-way permit, and on a busy road it can add traffic control. These are fixed items. They belong on the estimate up front, never as a surprise after the trench is open.

What the written estimate includes

  • The camera footage, with the defect and its depth marked, so you have seen it yourself
  • What is being repaired and what is being left, in writing
  • Excavation, pipe, backfill and compaction
  • What surface is being reinstated and to what standard, and what is not included
  • Permits, inspection and any right-of-way or traffic control
  • The warranty on our work, 60 to 90 days depending on the job

The estimate is free and the number does not change once it is written, unless the ground opens up and shows something the camera could not. If that happens we stop, show you and price it before going further.

Before you sign a sewer or drain line quote

What does it cost to repair a broken drain line?

It depends on where the break is and what sits on top of it. HomeAdvisor's Olney, MD page puts sewer main repair at an average of $2,531, with the low to high end running from $150 to $8,500 (page read October 2026). A spot repair at an exposed basement joint sits near the bottom of that. A collapsed section under a driveway sits near the top. We price it after the camera has found the break.

What should I ask before agreeing to a drain repair quote?

Ask to see the camera footage and where the defect is. Ask whether the price covers a spot repair or the whole line, whether the pipe will be dug or lined, who pulls the permit, and whether putting back the lawn, walk or driveway is included. Ask which part of the line is yours and which belongs to the utility, so you don't pay for the public side. Get every answer in writing.

Want a written price?

Tell us which drains are backing up and how often. The camera goes in first, and the number comes in writing after you have seen what it found.
