Plumbing work in progress in the DMV

Can I negotiate with plumbers?

You can, and the place it really works is the scope. Haggling over the number rarely does. Cutting the price on the same job usually means cutting something out of it, and a cheaper quote with less in it is not a better deal.

Ask for the options laid out side by side. Repair or replace. A like for like swap or an upgrade. The part that has to happen now and the part that can safely wait a few months. When more than one of those is an honest choice, we price each one.

Ask what is on the estimate and what is not. Patching the wall after a pipe repair, for instance, is priced separately from the plumbing. Knowing that up front is worth more than a discount you lose on the day.

Once the price is in writing it holds. It only changes if opening up reveals something new, and then we stop and price that part before going on.

Want it looked at?

Ask for your options priced side by side. Call or send the form and say you want to compare.
